Mississippi First Time Home Buyer Loans

If you’re a first time home buyer in Mississippi, you’ve chosen a state with affordable homes and strong ties to this nation’s history.  But you’ll need more than this to help you finance your mortgage loan, and if you’ve never done it before, the process can seem confusing.  Let us answer any questions you have.

Mississippi First Time Home Buyer Information

The first place we advise all our visitors to turn for information about the home purchase process is our first time home buyer checklist.  This list outlines many of the steps in the process in great detail.  We’ve written out the five most important steps here.

  • Figure out how much you can afford to borrow.  This will determine your loan amount.  You should do this before you find the home of your dreams, which might be more expensive than you can afford.
  • Make a choice about which loan type you want to pursue.  This will require you to research the different mortgage options available.
  • Fix up your credit if you need to.  This won’t apply to everybody, but if your score is low, you should fix it before you apply for a loan.
  • Compare the mortgage rates offered by as many local lenders as you can find.  Sound difficult?  It doesn’t have to be.  Just ask four or five lenders what rates they offer.  The lender who can provide you with the best rate gets your business.
  • Make sure you’re preapproved.  Do this as early in the process as you can.

These five steps will get you through the mortgage process successfully if you follow them.  Check out our mortgage calculator below to help you get started on step one.

1st Time Home Buyer Loan Programs

The Mississippi FHA loan is one of the preferred loan program options for first time home buyers in the state.  All FHA loans are insured by the Federal Housing Administration.  This gives lenders an incentive to offer better terms to the individuals they work with.

Some of these terms include a minimal down payment and a low credit score requirement.  Check the Mississippi FHA loan limits in your county before contacting an FHA lender.  You can get more information about the FHA program on the Mississippi page of the FHA website.

Mississippi residents experience humid summers and mild winters.  The rate of homeownership in the state is above average at 72.3%. The median home price is near the lower end of the spectrum at $71,400 in the entire state.  This makes it a great state for first time home buyers to get started in.
