Welcome to the second installment of our series on How to Get a VA Home Loan. Part 1 described the different groups of people that can apply for a VA home loan. Today we will discuss the VA Certificate of Eligibility.

In this modern day of countless choices and opportunities, the Veteran's Administration (VA) offers eligible people many ways to get their Certificate of Eligibility.

Online

People that are currently enlisted may request the certificate online. Simply contact one of our mortgage loan officers and make an appointment. At this time only qualified lenders have the access to the online system. If for some reason the certificate cannot be obtained through this system, the loan officer can assist you in requesting it from the VA. Simply fill out VA Form 26-1880 and give this to the lender along with proof of service. Your loan officer can then make an online request to the VA and receive and answer within a few days. The loan office can also use this process to determine your eligibility for the VA loan.

Mail

For those individuals that would prefer to handle the process on their own, you can provide your proof of service along with VA Form 26-1880 and mail them to the VA office located in Winston-Salem, NC. This approach usually takes at least 3 weeks or longer to complete.

What if you have used your Certificate of Eligibility?

For those people that have already taken advantage of the VA home loan with their Certificate of Eligibility you will need to provide proof that home was sold or the mortgage was assumed by a veteran. Along with this information you will need VA Form 26-1880 and your proof of service in order to restore your eligibility. Provide all of this documentation to your loan officer and they can get your new certificate for you.

In the upcoming Part 3 of this series, we will explain the VA Funding Fee.
