Alaska was purchased from Russian interests in the late 1800’s.  Alaska gets its name from an Aleutian word that means ‘mainland’, or more descriptively, “the object towards which the action of the sea is directed’.  Alaska does not border any other states; rather it borders Canadian territory, Yukon and Canadian province British Columbia.
