One theory states that it was named for the old province in France named Maine. Another theory says that the Colonial fisherman referred to it as the ‘main’ to distinguish it from the other areas along the coastline.

To the east, is the boisterous Atlantic Ocean. To Maine’s North, is the Canadian province of New Brunswick. One of the islands off of Maine, Machais Seal Island is still in dispute as to whether it belongs to Canada or the U.S.  Maine also has one of the largest tidal pools in the Western Hemisphere.

Maine is the most sparingly populated State east of the Mississippi River. The nickname for Maine is the Pine Tree State, and for good reason. About ninety percent of Maine is forest. Maine has almost 3500 miles of ocean shoreline.  Along that shoreline can be found quiet fishing villages, offshore islands, sandy beaches and infamous lighthouses.  Maine has warm but not generally hot summers, followed by cold and sometimes severe winters.

Maine’s economy thrives on its agricultural output as well as the seafood industry.  Maine also has a strong lumber and wood products industry.  Tourism also plays a major role in Maine’s economy. Sport Hunters and Sport fishers flock to Maine for the ample opportunities it provides.

Maine still has several areas of un-incorporated land. Famous Maine residents include Milton Bradley (board game inventor), Edna St. Vincent Malay, Liv Tyler, and Author Stephen King who often uses Maine as the setting for his work.  Portland is the largest city in Maine.  Portland has made recoveries from four terrible fires.  Portland is currently experiencing a great deal of growth.
Bangor is the commercial center for eastern and central Maine.

Bangor is the third largest city in the State, which is has been for over a century. This is a town with lots of amenities and plenty of charm.  Augusta is the capital city of Maine.  This is a lovely city on the Kennebec River. Of special note is the arboretum and botanical garden. If you are looking for a scenic, quiet place to call home, perhaps Maine is the place for you to own your next home.
