Oregon’s current population is around four million people, and it continues to grow. Oregon was first noted by expedition leaders for its great potential in the Fur Trading industry. The completion of the Oregon Trail brought many more settlers through the area, and Oregon became a State in 1859.  The origin of the State’s name is still unknown.

Oregon only has one National Park – Crater Lake National Park. Part of Oregon’s economy is still agricultural, including its contributions of hazelnuts and wine. Lumber, education and the high tech sector are other contributing factors to Oregon’s economy. The State has no sales tax. Oregon tends to have mild albeit short summers, and rain-heavy winters.

Salem is the State Capital. This city is located in Northern Oregon, just south of the more populated Portland. Salem is home to some one hundred and fifty thousand residents. Salem hosts the Oregon State Fair, and has a Saturday open air market from May to October.  This city has an excellent selection of private schools (elementary and high school).

Portland is Oregon’s most populous city, located near the Willamette and Columbia Rivers.  The city has over five hundred thousand residents. Portland is called ‘the City of Roses’ as it has an ideal climate for the flower. It has a famous rose garden in the city called The International Rose Garden, which shows off many varietals of roses. Portland is home to Oregon’s only professional sports team – the Portland Trail Blazers, and is famous for its number of microbreweries.  The majority of the city is laid out on a grid system.  Downtown Portland features Pioneer Courthouse Square ( a gathering place popular with locals and tourists), nearby is Portland State University and the Pioneer Place Mall. Portland is well known for their public transportation system which includes a light rail, buses and street cars.

The third largest city in Oregon is Eugene. This is a great college town located in the western part of the State. It is home to University of Oregon, and is a great place for progressive thinkers and avid outdoors enthusiasts. For those looking for a small town feel on the coast, there are the lovely coastal cities of Bandon, Coos Bay, Seaside or Tillamook, to name a few.

Other cities of note include Bend, and Ashland.  Bend Oregon is located in the Eastern part of the State. This is an outdoors enthusiast’s dreamland. This city boasts the Mt. Bachelor Ski resort, a film festival and is a smaller town of around seventy thousand residents.  In Southern Oregon, the city of Ashland is a huge draw because of its smaller population (around twenty thousand residents), and it is the home of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. With wonderful scenery and many opportunities for entertainment, Oregon is a great place to own a home.
