Winters bring rain and snow, with an occasional blizzard.

South Dakota has several places protected by the National Parks Service – including Badlands National Park, Wind Cave National Park, and Mount Rushmore National Memorial. This is probably the most well known attraction in South Dakota. It features a sculpture that was carved out of a mountain that resembles four former U.S. Presidents. The sales tax rate here is four percent.

The Capital City here is Pierre. The population of Pierre is under twenty thousand, making it the second least populated capital city.  Pierre has retained the title of Capital city ever since South Dakota was first granted Statehood.  The largest city in South Dakota is Sioux Falls.  Sioux Falls is located in the Southeastern part of the State.  The city has a reputation for a good economy, a low crime rate, and low unemployment, making it very livable.  Sioux Falls has many parks, but the best known one is Falls Park, which was created around the city’s namesake waterfalls. Most locals appreciate the hiking/biking/jogging trails featured around many of their parks.  While the city was once more agriculturally focused, it has moved out into the health care, retail and service industries. The city hosts a Western themed festival for three days in the Fall, called Spirit of the West.

Set against the Black Hills, is the city known as Rapid City. It is South Dakota’s second largest. The city is named after the nearby Rapid Creek.  Rapid City originally sprang up when gold was discovered in the Black Hills.  The completion of railroads and highways brought tourists into the Black Hills region.  The city has several venues for the fine arts.

In the Northeast, you can find the city of Aberdeen, which is the third largest city in the State.  This is a small town of around twenty five thousand residents. Some of the more popular forms of recreation in this city are golf, tennis and rollerblading. The Richmond lake area offers camping, boating, fishing, and swimming opportunities.  Another interesting amenity of the city is Storybook land which features attractions from several different children’s stories.  South Dakota is a very livable place with low population density. It could be a great place to become a homeowner.
