Secure a VA Mortgage in Mississippi

Mississippi is home to many veterans of the US Armed Services, and if you’re one of them, you likely qualify for a Mississippi VA loan.  This loan can be used to purchase a home or refinance a current mortgage.  All loans of this type are specialized and guaranteed by the Department of Veteran Affairs (VA).

What is the VA Loan?

The VA loan is a specialized type of loan that is only offered to veterans of the US military.  These loans are backed by the VA in order to help veterans purchase homes and build wealth.  Family stability and significant financial growth are associated with homeownership, and the men and women who have served this nation deserve as many opportunities as they can get to excel in these areas.

The VA doesn’t create loans itself.  Rather, it guarantees the loans that are made by traditional lenders to veterans.  These lenders then provide additional benefits and lower rates to the veterans they work with.

VA Loan Benefits in Mississippi

Check out the following list of beneficial characteristics common to VA loans.

  • You don’t have to make a down payment on your home purchase.
  • You don’t have to pay for private mortgage insurance.  This alone will save you hundreds or thousands of dollars.
  • You may not have to pay all closing costs.  This is helpful for borrowers who don’t have high cash reserves.
  • You don’t need a high credit score.  Lenders are more lenient with veterans.
  • You can pick from any number of different loan repayment arrangements.

VA Loan Requirements and Eligibility

You must meet the following requirements to qualify for a VA loan.

  • You must be an American citizen.
  • Service in the US Armed Services is necessary.
  • Your service time period must have lasted at least 90 consecutive days.
  • You must have been discharged under conditions other than dishonorable.
  • You should have a minimum 620 credit score.

With these requirements established, you’re good to go.  Contact your local VA office to get a certificate of eligibility.  You can then use this certificate to prove your eligibility to the VA loan specialist you work with.

VA Refinance

A refinance can potentially save you many thousands of dollars on your mortgage.  With a Mississippi VA Streamline refinance, you can save even more.  This is because some of the fees connected to a traditional refinance are waived through the Streamline program.  This is the most efficient way to refinance if you’re a veteran.

The Cash-Out refinance program is also backed by the VA, and borrowers can access up to 100% of their current home equity for home improvement, medical, school, or other costs. If borrowers do not currently have a VA mortgage, the Cash-Out option is a way to refinance into a VA loan.

Mississippi VA Mortgage Rates

The mortgage rate you get on your mortgage is critical.  You’ll have to do some research to find the lowest one available.  Contact as many different lenders in your area as you can and ask them about their rates.  Compare the answers they give you.  Not only will this provide you with a general idea of where the market rates are, it will also give you solid information on at least a few viable lenders.  The lowest mortgage rates are out there if you’re willing to work to find them.
